Artist’s Statement

I carve aluminum because of the sculptural quality and textured surfaces that can be achieved. Each

piece begins with a sketch but the carving is often intuitive and working directly with the metal allows

the piece to dictate its own path as it emerges. My forms are usually simple. Combined with texture and

color they reflect bits of nature, more meditative than provocative. The anodizing and dyeing process

for aluminum is unique and it allows me to layer washes of color or do intense saturations, instantly

conveying a mood or feeling. My work is a direct contrast to our culture today: it is slow to make,

doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, and is usually subtle and quiet.
